Hot, sunny weather and perfect calm water kicked off an amazing Day 1 featuring the Nautique Boats Amateur Wakestock Championship presented by Monster Energy, Billabong, PrideMarineGroup.com, and SBC Wakeboard Magazine.
Over 120 amateur riders ranging from novice through to Canada’s best am wakeboarders threw it down for over $5,000 in prizes courtesy of Nautique Boats, PrideMarineGroup.com, Billabong, Monster Energy, SBC Wakeboard Magazine, Hyperlite, Ronix, CWB, O’Brien, Liquid Force, Slingshot, Straightline and Kicker.
Riders competed all day long on two separate courses towed behind the new 2011 Super Air Nautique 230 boat in front of over 3,000 spectators. The top 3 amateur wakeboarders: Jordan Long of Orillia, Ontario; Chris Sinkic of Barrie, Ontario; and Jake Thompson of Hastings, Ontario qualified for the Wakestock WWA World Series that starts today. And the three top amateur wakeskaters: Brady Hicks of Haliburton, Ontario; Adam Fairbrass or Morrison Lake, Ontario; and Jeffery Braun of Muskoka, Ontario qualified for the Billabong Wakestock Pro Wakeskate Championship that starts today.
"One of the most exciting things about this year’s Nautique Wakestock Amateur Championship is the growth we are seeing in our youngest age categories”, said Wakestock co-founder Steve Jarrett. "This is the first time in Wakestock’s 14 year history that we’ve had to run two heats and a finals to accommodate the 12 & Under division – and the level of riding of these kids as young as 6 years old is unbelievable. Watch out for this next generation!” (See 12 & Under photo on right).
In addition to the Nautique Wakestock Amateur Championships, the Wakestock Action Sports Expo & Marketplace opened on Day 1 with over 40 exhibitors offering amazing deals on everything from wakeboarding gear to surfwear to skateboards, stand-up paddleboards, sunglasses, and more. Also hopping with action were the Coors Light Beer Garden, the Wakestock Skatepark, the Skimboard Pool, Sony Playstation Gaming Lounge, the Nautique Boats Exhibit of the latest wakeboard boats courtesy of PrideMarineGroup.com, and more!
Saturday, the Monster Energy Music Stage cranks up the Wakestock Festival party with Boston punk legends Dropkick Murphys and SoCal surf rockers The Dirty Heads leading the line-up of 7 bands starting at 12:30pm. The WWA Pro World Series wakeboarding and wakeskating qualifications run all day.
The forecast is for the amazing weather to continue all weekend long so get your ass to Wakestock in Collingwood asap!
And don’t miss the Saturday night after-parties including the Legendary After-Bash at the Collingwood-GNE Fairgrounds hosted by Dean Blundell and Todd Shapiro of 102.1 the Edge and featuring Eoin Sinclair of Bedouin Soundclash and DJ Conor Cutz, plus on-site camping.
